Little Alchemy — Hand-Written Recipes vs Infinite Craft

The first element-combining game most people played, years before Infinite Craft existed. But the two feel nothing alike once you actually start combining. One is a puzzle with a clear finish line; the other is a sandbox that never ends. This guide breaks down the differences and tells you which one to play depending on what you want.

Short answer: Little Alchemy has 580 hand-written recipes with fixed results. Infinite Craft generates results on the fly, which means unlimited combinations but no consistency. If you want a puzzle with a clear finish line, go with the first one. If you want a sandbox that never ends, go with the second.

🧪 What the game actually is

You start with four elements — Air, Earth, Fire, and Water. Drag one onto another to combine them. Water + Earth = Mud. Fire + Earth = Lava. Air + Fire = Energy. There is no timer, no score, no fail state. Just a canvas and a growing library of discovered elements.

The first version had around 100 elements. It grew to 580 standard items plus 9 hidden ones — 589 in total. A sequel expands this with additional content packs, but the original still holds up as the cleanest version of the formula.

🔑 Best starting combos

These four recipes unlock the largest number of follow-up combinations. Build them in this order and you will never feel stuck.

⚡ Energy
Fire + Air = Energy

Leads to Life, Lightning, and Storm. Required for over 40 recipes.

💧 Mud
Water + Earth = Mud

Leads to Swamp, Clay, and Brick. Gateway to Life.

🌧️ Rain
Water + Air = Rain

Leads to Plant, Storm, and Flood. Needed for most plant recipes.

🔥 Lava
Fire + Earth = Lava

Leads to Volcano and Obsidian. Required for Primordial Soup.

🧬 How to make Life

Short answer: Combine Swamp + Energy. Six combinations from scratch.

1 Fire + Air Energy
2 Water + Earth Mud
3 Water + Air Rain
4 Rain + Earth Plant
5 Plant + Mud Swamp
6 Swamp + Energy Life

There is also a slower alternative: Love + Time = Life. It works, but takes longer to set up. Once Life is in your library, Human comes from Life + Earth — the same shortcut you will find in our Infinite Craft Human guide. From there, the whole biology branch opens up: Animal, Bird, Fish, and eventually the dinosaur recipes.

🔍 Nine hidden elements most players never find

There are nine secret elements that do not appear in the standard recipe list. They are references to internet culture, science fiction, and fantasy. None are required to finish the game, but they are the most fun combinations to discover.

❓ Questions players ask

Is Little Alchemy the same as Infinite Craft?
No. The recipes here are hand-written, so results are always the same. Infinite Craft generates results in real time, which means unlimited combinations but no consistency. One feels like a puzzle, the other feels like a sandbox.
How many elements are there?
580 standard elements plus 9 hidden ones, for 589 total. The sequel expands this with additional content packs.
How do you make Life?
Combine Swamp and Energy. Swamp comes from Plant + Mud. Energy comes from Fire + Air. There is also an alternate route: Love + Time = Life.
What makes it different from Infinite Craft?
Three things. First, recipes are hand-written, so results never change. Second, there is a fixed 580-element ceiling. Third, many combinations simply do not work, while Infinite Craft almost never rejects a combination.
Is it good for kids?
Yes. The browser version has no ads, no accounts, and no timers. It works well as an educational game because every combination follows real-world logic — Water + Earth = Mud, Fire + Earth = Lava, and so on.
Can you play it unblocked at school?
Usually yes. It runs in any modern browser and does not require downloads or plugins. Many school filters block by domain, so a game hosted elsewhere often loads fine. It also works offline once it has loaded.
